Graphic cards and RAID Storage

A very informative article from Christoph Vonrhein, with respect to graphic cards for Mac Pro Towers. The following cards are available.

NVIDIA GeForce 7300 GT
ATI Radeon X1900 XT
NVIDIA Quadro FX 4500

The difference between the cards is explained clearly.

Tests run using plugins for both Motion and FCP.

Hard drives just keep on getting bigger and bigger. Hitachi for example is bringing out a 1tb hard drive and are rumored to be working on a 5tb drive. Needless to say the bigger they are the harder they fall. time to give a RAID option some serious consideration?
Again over at Ken Stones site an article about some of the different RAID storage options that are out there.

Wraparound and Tele Port (UPDATED)

Wraparound is designed for really lazy people like me. Most of us have worked with two monitors. It´s no longer mind boggling to move with the mouse from the left to the right monitor and vice a versa.

But what happens for example if the mouse is on the far right of the right monitor and want to get all the way over to the left of the left again. Then we have to move the mouse from right to left, across two monitors to the there! Like if you have two 23″ monitors this can be a real pain.

Enter wraparound. Install and activate. Now move the mouse to the edge of the right hand monitor and it appears at the edge of the left hand monitor. The reverse is also true. i.e. from left to right! It´s even possible in the preferences to move from one monitor down to the next!

Think of it as the mouse doubling back behind the monitors. Surprisingly strange at first but very addictive!

wraparound and teleport

Teleport is good if you´ve got more than one mac lying around and at least two monitors. Hook the the computers up with a network cable. Install the Tele Port software on both computers. And open those ports. See FAQ link below

FAQs

I needed help on this one from my friend Luis. He got me to switch the TCP port numbers so that they mirror each other! i.e. reverse the order of the TCP Numbers on the second computer.

Then watch the magic. With both computers up and running this software, you can simply wander with your mouse from one computer screen to the other and thus switch computer! It´s so simple that it´s a little baffling at first.

I´ve got a USB hub connected to my main computer, with keyboard, mouse and printer connected. When I switch computer, by changing screen all my USB stuff switches as well.

Further having made the switch, from screen too screen and thus computer too computer it´s a sinch to get programs running parallel with out even having to change keyboard and mouse!

Extremely cool

Of course I couldn´t resist installing both utilities and playing with them. As of now I can use wraparound with my 2 monitor set up and get from 1 monitor set up over onto the 2 monitor set up. Confused!

P.S. Needless to say you can easily change which monitor is the main monitor by going into the system preferences, arrangement tab and clicking and dragging that little white rectangle from your main monitor to the other.

thanks to Hase for turning me on to this one
